Where Should I Locate a Floor Stop for a Door?

If someone uses too much force when opening a door, it can slam into objects on the other side and damage them. Doorknobs can bore holes into walls and pictures; swinging doors can knock aside lamps and smash into desks. Floor stops, or floor-mounted door stops, screw into the ground and impede a door's motion before it has a chance to slam into something. A floor stop needs to be located in a specific place to catch the door effectively.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the door to the point where you want it to stop. Make sure the door knob doesn't strike the wall.

    • 2

Mark the floor with a pencil at the corner of the open door, where the side of the door being stopped and the outer edge meet.

    • 3

      Close the door.

    • 4

Measure 2 inches toward the closed door, using the original mark as the reference point. Make another mark here. This is the contact point for the floor stop's bumper and the door.

    • 5

Adjust the position of the floor stop as necessary to ensure the floor stop's bumper and the hinge-side face of the door meet at the contact point. Some models feature bumpers that protrude from the body of the floor stop, while others have bumpers that lie in the center of the floor stop.

Attach the floor stop according to manufacturer's instructions.
