Guide to Installing a Manual Garage Door Opener

Installing your own manual garage door opener can be a satisfying weekend project -- or a frustrating nightmare. The difference depends less on your abilities than on your choice of opener and some preparation.
  1. Features

    • Two of the most important features to look for in a garage door opener are sturdy, complete hardware packages and clear, easily understood directions. Many so-called bargain openers are flimsy or don't include all the pieces you need to complete the installation. you'll find it equally frustrating to have all the right pieces but no idea where they go due to inadequate instructions.

    Considerations

    • Powder-coated tracks are more expensive than galvanized tracks. If you're on a budget, put your extra cash in heavy-duty nylon wheels. Unless your garage door is an extremely wide or heavy model, look for an opener that uses easier-to-install extension springs rather than torsion springs. If you do choose an opener that uses torsion springs, keep in mind that winding the springs can be extremely hazardous.

    Get Organized

    • Take some time to read and understand the instructions thoroughly. As you do so, assemble all the tools you'll need, step by step. Before starting the job, check the contents of the box against the parts list to ensure everything's there.
