How to Measure for Slider Blinds

Vertical blinds are a common window treatment for sliding glass doors. If the inside space is limited because your door is fitted with protruding handles, choose an outside mount to prevent the blind from catching on the hardware. Mounting your blind inside the opening is a good choice if the opening is deep enough or if the door is fitted with a recessed handle. When measuring, use a steel tape, record the measurements in inches, and round the figure down to the nearest eighth of an inch.

Measure the width of the opening with a steel measuring tape. Add 8 inches for light control and privacy. Specify "Blind width for outside mount" on your order form. If the patio door opening abuts against a side wall, bookcase or cabinets, add 4 inches instead of 8 inches, and make a rough sketch on your order form showing the obstruction.

Measure the height of the opening in three places; left, middle and right. Use the lowest measurement. Specify "Opening height for outside mount" on your order form. If there are any valances, cornice boxes or other obstructions above the door, measure the height of the obstruction, and include a rough sketch on your order form.

Measure the width of the opening in three places; top, middle and bottom, if you are measuring for vertical blinds mounted inside the opening. Mark this measurement as "Inside mounting opening width." The blind factory will deduct enough room for hardware clearance and also ensure that the slats overlap sufficiently for privacy.

Measure the height from the floor to the inside of the opening above the door in three places; left, middle and right. Use the lowest measurement, and mark this figure as "Opening height for inside mount." The factory will deduct the appropriate amount on the bottom of the blind to allow for floor clearance.

Specify on which side you want to mount the operating cords. Blinds typically slide away from the door handles, but you can opt for the blinds to open from the middle outward.
