How to Install a Lock on a Dutch Door

Dutch doors are split to allow for the top half to open independently of the bottom half. As an exterior door, a Dutch door is difficult to lock. The standard use of the Dutch-door system is with garden sheds, kitchens, or other interior uses where a pass-through is needed while blocking foot traffic. Installing a lock on a Dutch door is the same process as installing a lock on any door. Deadbolts are mounted to the bottom door and a slide latch is attached to the top which anchors to the bottom door.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the door knob hole cutting guide to the door. The cutting guide is a type of clamp that attaches to the door with holes that align for the cut through the door the lock mechanism and the cut into the side of the door for the actual deadbolt. The guide is available through most hardware stores and comes with explicit instructions for the use of the tool.

    • 2

Drill holes through the side of the door and through the door with hole cutting drill bits included with the purchase of the cutting guide and a drill.

    • 3

Install the deadbolt following assembly instructions included with the lock. The only tools necessary for the installation is a screwdriver and an allen wrench. The proper-sized allen wrench is typically included with the purchase of the lock. Attach the face plate to the side of the door last.

    • 4

Close the door and activate the lock to identify the positioning of the deadbolt against the frame. Mark the frame with a mark above and below the deadbolt where it meets the frame.

    • 5

Drill a 1-inch hole with a 1-inch drill bit for the dead bolt to a depth of 1 to 1.5 inches. Close the door and test the fit. Widen the hole by drilling above and below the area if needed to allow the dead bolt to fully extend.

    • 6

Insert the face plate against the hole and carefully close the door. Extend the deadbolt through the hole in the face plate to obtain the proper alignment. Mark the alignment of the face plate with a pencil and unlock and open the door. Mount the faceplate with the included screws in the proper position. Close and test the door.

Attach the latching kit to the top aspect of the Dutch door a few inches from edge pointed down toward the bottom half of the door with the screws included in the kit and a drill with a screwdriver drill bit. Close the doors and attach the bottom half of the latch kit to the bottom door with the latch extended to obtain the proper alignment. Test the door and adjust the positioning of the latch as needed.
