How to Measure a Special Order Storm Door

A storm door attaches to an exterior part of an exterior door jamb. This part of the jamb is commonly called the brick mold. The trim isn't really brick, though; it's wood. Wood is the only material suitable for storm door installation. Measuring for a custom door means your storm door size doesn't match any of the standard door sizes, which run from 30 to 36 inches wide and from 80 to 85 inches tall. If the exterior brick mold trim doesn't exist, you'll have to install some before the door is installed.

Take three measurements of the width of the opening. Measure across the top, across the middle and across the bottom. Record the narrowest of the three. Place the tape tab on one inside edge of the brick mold and measure to the opposite inside edge.

Measure the height by taking three similar measurements: from the top inside edge of the brick mold to the bottom on the left and right sides, and again in the center of the opening.

Measure the depth between the main door and the point where you'll mount the storm door. It has to be at least 3¾-inches deep in order to accommodate the jamb bracket and pump that make up the Z-bar.
