Instructions for Hanging a Bifold Door

Bifold doors save space. The doors swing on pivot pins at the top and bottom on one side and fold in the middle, thus using only half the space a standard door uses to open. Common installations for bifold doors include closets, pantries, utility and laundry rooms, or just about anywhere a door is needed and space is restricted. Hanging a bifold door requires a few tools and less than an hour of your time.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the bottom pivot pin into the hole in the bottom of the door. Use a mallet to seat the pivot, using gentle taps. Press the top pivot pin into the hole at the top of the door directly above the bottom pivot pin, and seat it with the mallet. The top pivot has a spring mechanism, while the bottom pivot adjusts up and down by screwing it in and out. Install the guide pin in the hole on the top of the door opposite the top pivot pin and seat it with the mallet.

    • 2

Place the bottom pivot bracket in the door opening on the floor so the top screw hole is 3/4 inch from the front of the door opening. Drive the supplied mounting screws through the bracket screw holes into the door opening. If the bracket has a screw hole for the floor, drive a screw into the floor through the screw hole.

    • 3

Center the top track in the top of the door opening and 3/4 inch from the front of the door opening. Drive screws through each screw hole to fasten the track in place.

    • 4

Set the door in the opening with the bottom pivot pin in the bottom bracket's notched slot. Depress the top pivot pin and guide it into the pivot pin hole in the track. Depress the guide pin and guide it into the track.

    • 5

Adjust the door position by moving the bottom pivot pin in the notched slot on the bottom bracket until the space between the door and door opening is even from top to bottom.

    • 6

Adjust the top pivot position if it is necessary to move the entire door closer to or farther away from the door opening. Loosen the adjustment screw, slide the pivot to the desired position and retighten it. Adjust the bottom pivot to match the new location of the top pivot.

    • 7

Insert a supplied bolt from the back of the door into the hole for the doorknob or pull. Screw the knob onto the bolt to complete the installation.
