How to Paint Pine Doors Using a Roller

Remove the pine door from the doorway. Place a large, flat-head screwdriver in the bottom center of the hinge where the door pin is located. Tap the base of the screwdriver handle with a hammer to move the pin out of the hinge. Remove both pins and set aside.

Transfer the door to a work area covered with plastic sheeting. Lean the door against a sawhorse or a wall on top of two scrap pieces of wood.

Remove the hinges from the pine door. Depending on the type of screws, use a flat or Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screws holding the hinges in place. Set the screws and hinges aside with the door pins.

Mix your primer. With a stir stick, thoroughly mix the primer paint. Pour the primer into the paint tray until it is half full. Use a towel to wipe the excess from the rim of the paint can.

Slide the roller onto the roller handle. Roll the roller through the paint, saturating the roller brush with the primer. Lift and allow the excess paint to drip off into the paint pan.

Paint the door. Begin at the base of the pine door, and roll upward through the full length of one side of the door. It might take two to three widths of the roller to completely cover the door with the primer. Paint the inside edge of the door with the roller as well. Remove excess paint along each side of the inside edge with a brush. Allow the painted side to dry for several hours before turning the door over to paint the other side.

Mix your paint. Stir the colored paint of your choice with another stir stick. Mix thoroughly until the paint is blended. Rinse out paint pan and roller with water to reuse, or use a new roller brush and pan.

Pour the paint into the tray until it is half full. Thoroughly saturate the roller brush with paint, allowing the excess paint to drip off into the pan.

Paint the door in the same manner as you put on the primer. Thoroughly cover one side and the inside edge of the pine door, allowing the paint to dry for several hours before painting the other side.

Let the door dry for 24 hours before replacing the hardware and remounting the door.
