How to Install Flooring Under a Doorjamb

When you're replacing carpet with wood or laminate flooring, doorjambs may get in the way during the installation process. A jamb is the outside framing of the door and is fastened directly to the surrounding wall. Instead of removing the jamb, use an undercut saw to trim it to the correct height. Undercut saws come in hand-held or electric versions. If you'll be making a lot of jamb cuts, use an electric undercut saw; a cheaper hand-held undercut saw will suffice for smaller jobs.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the lower portion of the doorjamb to make sure there aren't any fasteners located at the points where the cut will be made. Use a nail set tool and a hammer to push nails through the jamb and into the wall framing underneath to remove any fasteners.

    • 2

Secure the lower portion of the jamb with a new fastener if one was removed; make sure the new fastener placement will not be in the way of the location where the cut will be made.

    • 3

Place a piece of scrap flooring material next to the doorjamb. Set the undercut saw on top of the flooring material so the blade is resting against the jamb.

    • 4

Cut through the doorjamb, using the undercut saw. Remove the scrap wood pieces and clean any debris from under the doorjamb.

    • 5

Slide the flooring under the doorjamb, and secure it in place, using the manufacturer's recommended technique.
