Examine the current door, frame and space, using a tape measure to record the dimensions. Write them all down on a notepad.
When you buy a new prehung, fireproof door unit with the frame, confirm that the unit is the size as your measurements.
Loosen and remove the current door from its frame by tapping out the hinge bolts. Use a pin and hammer to tap the pins out if they are difficult to move. Place the door slab aside.
Remove the door frame itself from the surrounding wall by carefully prying it loose with a crowbar or claw hammer. Wipe and scrape the wall edge clean so no leftover bits are sticking out or old nails in the way.
Disconnect the new fireproof door from the prehung frame by popping the pins from the hinges. Place it aside for a moment. Take the new frame and shift it to the opening. Use wood wedges to adjust the frame so that it is level horizontally and vertically. Use a level to confirm this correctly.
Hammer nails into the frame to secure it once it is level. Take the door itself and line it up with the hinges. Have a partner hold the door while you reinstall the pins into the hinges. Check the swing of the door to ensure that it doesn't rub against the frame, frame ceiling or floor as it moves.
Dispose of the remaining old door and leftover frame pieces. Install a new handle in your fireproof door and frame to finish the work, securing it's assembly with a screwdriver.
