How to Trim a Hollow-Core Door

Hollow-core doors are common as interior doors in homes. They are inexpensive, lightweight and fairly easy to replace. When replacing or adjusting an interior door, you may discover that you need to trim the door to make it fit into the door frame. Hollow-core doors have a wood frame that surrounds the door. You can trim a small portion from the interior door frame if necessary when working on them.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the hollow-core door onto two sawhorses. Space the sawhorses evenly beneath the door.

    • 2

Measure the interior door frame, using a tape measure.

    • 3

Mark the door in several places at the measurements, using a pencil. Mark the door on the edge opposite of the side where you will place the hinges. Use a straight edge to draw a straight line, connecting all the marks.

    • 4

Adjust the door to move the cut line off the sawhorses.

    • 5

Trim the hollow-core door carefully, using a circular saw. Ask a friend to hold the door onto the sawhorses while you cut.

    • 6

Sand the cut edge lightly to smooth it down and remove any wood burrs. Measure the door to ensure it will fit into the door frame.
