How to Reset a Door Knob Pin

Modern doorknobs are generally integrated into a complex latch system that makes it impractical to try to repair or replace any one part; if the doorknob malfunctions, you simply replace the whole unit. Old-fashioned glass or marble knobs, however, are simpler mechanisms, with two standard knobs joined by a threaded pin. When old doorknobs start getting loose, it usually means the pin is stripped and you must replace it.

Things You'll Need

  • Shims
  • Small screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Replacement doorknob threaded pin (available at most hardware stores)

Instructions

    • 1

Slide wood shims underneath the door to secure it in a half-open position so you can access both sides without it moving.

    • 2

Loosen the slotted screw on the collar of one of the two doorknobs with your screwdriver while holding the second knob (on the other side of the door) steady with your free hand to prevent it from moving.

    • 3

Pull the knob off the pin. Pull the second knob out of the door, still attached to the pin.

    • 4

Loosen the slotted screw on the collar of the second knob as you hold the knob in your hand. Pull the pin free and discard it.

    • 5

Thread the new pin into the second knob in a clockwise direction. Tighten the slotted screw.

    • 6

Slide the pin into the latch hole until the second knob is against the latch assembly. Thread the first doorknob onto the pin from the other side. Tighten the slotted screw on the first knob.
