How to Remove Doorknobs in an Interior Mobile Home

Update the doors of your mobile home with new doorknobs. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how to remove the old knobs. Interior mobile home doors have one of two types of doorknob fasteners: visible screws and invisible screws. The visible screw type allows a homeowner to readily access the screws, but the invisible screws are hidden beneath a decorative doorknob cover plate. A retaining lever holds this cover plate in place until removal is required.

Instructions

  1. Visible Screw Type Door Knobs

    • 1

      Open the door.

    • 2

Remove the screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Remove each one 1/4-inch at a time to keep them from binding. Pull the screws out of their sockets.

    • 3

Hold the doorknobs on each side of the open door and try pulling them apart. If they don't readily separate, twist the in opposite directions of each other and pull them apart.

    • 4

Undo the screws that hold the latch mechanism to the door. Push this mechanism out of the latch hole with the screwdriver. This is done by sliding the screwdriver through the hole from which the doorknobs were removed. Extend the screwdriver all the way through until you can grab it on the other side of the door. Grab it and pull it, along with the screwdriver handle, toward your body. This will pop the latch mechanism out of the door latch hole.

Locate the retaining lever between the doorknob and the decorative plate cover. This is usually found on the shaft of the doorknob.

    • 6

Push the lever in with a flat-head screwdriver. Hold it in while placing a second flat-head screwdriver beneath the edge of the decorative plate cover. This edge is located where the plate meets the door face. Pry the cover up past the retaining lever.
