Place the edge of your tape measure against the exterior trim of one of the side jambs, near the top of the door opening. Stretch the tape measure across the door opening to the opposite side jamb and read the measurement. This tells you the width of your door opening.
Repeat Step 1 in the center of your door opening and again at the bottom of the door opening. Write down the narrowest width of the three measurements.
Place the edge of your tape measure on the bottom right corner. Measure from this corner up to the top right corner. Make sure you are taking the measurement from the edge of the door trim, not from the surface of the doorjamb.
Repeat Step 3 in the center of the door and on the left-hand side. Write down the shortest measurement.
