How to Frame a Door With Drywall

Doorways that have a door installed are trimmed with wood to hold the door to the wall. However a doorway that has no door can be simple with just a flat surface to cover its edges. This is normally done by covering the doorway with drywall and finishing it as you do the walls. This is not difficult with basic drywall tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Install the wall drywall on either side of the door so that it hangs over the doorway by about 1/2 inch. Screw the drywall into the studs of the wall and into the door frame with drywall screws.

    • 2

Measure the inner space between the wall drywall that is extending into the door opening. Measure the width and height of both sides of the door frame as well as the top.

    • 3

Cut drywall to match these measurements. Draw marks on the drywall and use a knife to score the material along the lines. Snap the board along the edge of a table to break off the pieces.

    • 4

Place the cut pieces of drywall in the door frame between the wall drywall. Drill drywall screws through the material and into the door frame to attach them. Do this on both sides and the top.

    • 5

Trim off the excess part of the drywall that is extending into the door opening from the walls on either side of the doorway. Use a knife to cut it off.

    • 6

Place metal corner pieces along the corners of the door opening. This is used instead of the normal drywall tape on outward corners because of the abuse these corners usually receive. Drill screws through the holes on the metal strips and into the drywall and frame.

    • 7

Spread on drywall compound over the corners on the outside and inside of the door frame. Make this a thin coat that barely covers the metal stripping. Let it dry overnight, then sand it smooth to remove any roughness.

    • 8

Spread on a second layer of drywall compound, ensuring that this layer fully covers the metal stripping. Have it go further out from the metal onto the drywall, tapering down the further out you go. Let this dry for a day, then sand lightly.
