How to Take Apart a Doorknob Lock

Homeowners change doorknobs and locks for safety and aesthetic reasons. Though some doorknobs have visible screws, many styles hide the screws under the doorknob trim for security reasons. Removing the doorknob itself is another puzzle. Though many doorknobs conceal the mounting screws, the lock is simple to remove once you know where to look.

Instructions

    • 1

Inspect the interior doorknob shank for a small hole or slot, usually located on the bottom of the shank. Insert a narrow, flat-blade screwdriver or wire into this hole while gently pulling on the knob. The knob should slide off.

    • 2

Remove all visible screws from the doorknob trim (the circular metal hardware framing the doorknob). If there are no screws, carefully slide a narrow, flat-blade screwdriver under the trim and pry it off to reveal mounting screws underneath.

    • 3

Remove the mounting screws with the appropriate screwdriver.

    • 4

Pull out the rest of the lock from the exterior side of the door.
