How to Install a Door Scope

A door scope provides added home security by allowing you to view and identify visitors without having to open the door. Door scopes are designed so you do not have to put your eye right up to the door to view visitors. Some designs allow you to be up to 7 feet away and still be able to see a clear image. Installing a door scope is easy to do; it requires only a few basic tools and can be done in minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Stand on the inside of the door and determine the best location for the scope according to your height. Measure up from the bottom of the door to this spot. Transfer this measurement to the exterior of the door. Make sure the location is centered, and place a reference mark on the door.

    • 2

Stick the supplied template to the outside of the door at the reference mark. Use a level to ensure the horizontal line on the template is level on the door.

    • 3

Attach a 3/8-inch drill bit to your drill and drill two holes on the outside of the door as indicated on the template. These holes are for the index pins on the outside part of the scope and should be no deeper than 1/8 inch. Do not drill all the way through to the inside of the door.

    • 4

Attach the 2-3/8-inch hole saw to your drill. Drill from the outside of the door until the tip of the bit begins to show on the inside of the door. Back the drill out and finish drilling the hole from the inside of the door. This will help to keep the edges of the cut-out area smooth.

    • 5

Separate the scope into two parts by unscrewing the outside part from the inside part. The outside part is the smaller of the two.

    • 6

Insert the outside part into the exterior of the door. Make sure the index pins are seated in the two 3/8-inch holes.

    • 7

Insert the larger, main body of the scope through the hole from the inside of the door. While holding the outside part, tightly screw the main body to the front.

    • 8

Secure the door scope with the supplied ring nut. Tighten it to the inside of the scope until it makes solid contact with the door's surface.
