Instructions for an Easy Lock Deadbolt

If you've moved into a new home or had a recent break-in attempt, you might not be satisfied with the security of your door. If this is the case, adding a new deadbolt lock to your door may ease your mind. A deadbolt lock can only be moved to the unlock position by turning the lock, unlike a spring lock, which can be picked. Deadbolt locks are often very strong, but different security styles are available.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the paper template that comes with the deadbolt onto the door to find the drilling position. Mark through the paper where the lock mechanism will go, and on the side of the door. Use the measurements on the paper template that are appropriate for your door size.

    • 2

Choose a hole saw bit that is the same size as the deadbolt assembly. Place the drill bit for your hole saw on the hole you made through the paper. Have a friend hold a carpenter square right above the drill and use the square as a guide to keep your drilling straight. Press the trigger and drill halfway through the door. The drill bit will make a hole on the other side that you can use as a guide to finish the hole. Drilling halfway through on each side prevents splintering.

Drill the side hole for the deadbolt on the side of the door, using a spade bit appropriate for the size of your deadbolt lock.

    • 4

Place the deadbolt into the hole made and mark around the plate. Place a wood chisel within the marks and hold it at a sharp angle. Hit the chisel with a hammer to knock out the wood. This recesses the wood enough for the plate to fit into the door.

    • 5

Screw the deadbolt into the door, using the provided screws. Align the turning plate and the key plate on their sides of the door and screw them together. Test the bolt.

Mark the outside of the bolt with a permanent marker and close the door. Move the lock so it touches your door jamb. You will have a mark to install the strike plate on. Place the strike plate so the permanent marker mark is inside the plate opening. Mark the opening of the strike plate and around the plate. Drill the hole for the middle of the strike plate, using a spade bit. Make the hole larger by hitting it with a chisel. Remove a bit of the surface wood so the strike plate fits, then screw the plate down.
