How to Wire Sears Garage Door Openers

Sears garage door openers are sold with a three-pin, grounded plug that you can use to provide power to the opener unit. However, some local electrical codes require permanent wiring to be established. Your local building department will be able to tell you if you are required to hard-wire the garage door opener. If you are, wiring a garage door opener can be accomplished by removing parts and hooking up wires.

Instructions

Remove the plastic cover by unscrewing it, and place the cover to one side. Keep the screws safe.

    • 2

Unscrew the attached cord that terminates in the three-pronged plug. It will be attached to terminals within the opener and exits the opener through a 7/8-inch diameter hole in the top. Loosen the terminal screws. Then pull the cord away from the opener and discard it.

Connect the permanent wiring by passing the sheathed wires through the 7/8-inch diameter hole in the top and attaching the bare ends of the wires to the terminals. Connect the black, neutral wire to the screw on the brass terminal, and the white, live wire to the silver terminal screw. Then connect the green ground wire to the ground tab on the opener. The ground tab is not on the terminal that you used for the live and neutral wires, but is off to the side and labeled. Reattach the cover.
