How to Wire the Safety Sensor for a Garage Door Opener

Safety sensors on a garage door opener are located a few inches from the ground on each side of the door. An invisible beam of light is transmitted from a sending sensor to a receiving sensor. When the path of the light is broken, the door is programmed to stop and reverse. The path can be broken by any object, including children or pets. Wiring the sensors is accomplished by connecting the sensors to the opener.

Instructions

Mount the sensor onto the brackets with the lenses pointing at each other and tighten the wing nuts. Then run a set of dual wire bell wire from each sensor to the opener on the ceiling and fasten the wires to the wall and ceiling with staples. Be careful not to short out the wire by allowing a staple to penetrate the sheath.

Strip a quarter inch of insulation off each end of each piece of wire and connect the wires to the opener by wrapping the wires under the terminal screws and tightening them. The white wire connects to Position 2 and the white and black wire connects to Position 3 on a Sears opener. Position 1 is not used by the Sears sensors. Your manufacturer may use different color and numerical combinations, so check.

Connect the bell wire to the sensors using the same color and numerical combinations.
