How to Connect a Garage Door Opener Emergency Release Cord

Electrically operated garage doors have an emergency release function that disengages the electric motor and its associated apparatus, and allows the door to be opened manually. This is an important safety feature to allow for fire escape if there's a power outage. The cord and handle must be attached to the release arm of the outer trolley when you are installing the garage door opener.

Instructions

    • 1

Thread an end of the cord through the hole in the top of the handle. Warning notices must read the right way up and not upside-down--the cord will hang from the trolley. Secure the cord onto the handle with a knot.

    • 2

Thread the other end of the rope through the hole in the release arm of the outer trolley and tie it with a knot. The handle should fall 6 feet above the ground. Cut the rope to fit with a knife if necessary and seal the cut end with a match--the rope is an artificial fiber and the end will melt to stop fraying.

Pull on the handle to test. This should release the trolley so that you can manually open and close the door.
