How to Install Brass Plates

Brass, long used as a decorative metal, is made by mixing copper and zinc. Less expensive than silver and gold, brass does not rust and is frequently formed into the door knockers, door handles, numbers and plates adorning wooden front doors. Installing a brass plate, no matter what size, requires only the most basic mechanical skills and tools. You could call a professional handyman to do the job, but you could probably buy a matching lock set with the money you'd save by doing it yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the door. Divide the width by two and mark the midpoint at the height you want to place the brass plate.

    • 2

Center the brass plate over the midpoint and hold it in place with one hand. Mark the door through the screw holes at each end of the plate.

    • 3

Press a screw through the plate at one of the screw marks. Allow the plate to hang on the screw. Hold the drill against the screw and drive the screw into the door.

    • 4

Raise the other end of the plate so that the hole is over the other mark. Drive a second screw into the the door.
