Deadbolt Lock Installation

Adding a deadbolt lock to a door improves the security of a home by providing a stronger locking mechanism than a simple handle lock. Installation requires making precise measurements, careful drilling and properly situating the holes in the door. Deadbolt locks come in a variety of finishes to match the decor of any home, and also have a large number of handle styles. They are available from most hardware, window and door and home improvement stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the deadbolt packaging and verify that all the parts are included. Read the installation instructions to make sure there are no special steps for the particular deadbolt model.

    • 2

Unfold the deadbolt lock paper template and position it approximately six inches above the doorknob. Tape the template to the door using masking tape. Line up the tip of an awl with the reference markings on the template and lightly strike it with a hammer to make guides for drilling the appropriate holes through the door on both sides.

    • 3

Attach a hole saw bit attachment to a drill and line up the point of the bit with the awl marks. Drill through the door and make sure that both sides are evenly cut. Place a 1-1/2-inch wood boring bit into the drill and drill through the edge of the door to create the opening for the bolt mechanism. Stop drilling when you enter the cavity created drilling through the door face.

    • 4

Extend the bolt and slide the bolt latch mechanism through the drilled hole making sure it is snug, but still slides in smoothly. Push the door closed so the bolt rests against the inside door jam. Use a pencil to mark the center point where the bolt contacts the jam and reopen the door. Push the bolt back into the door so it is flush with the door edge.

    • 5

Center the strike plate against the interior door jam, and make sure that the mark for the bolt is perfectly positioned at the middle of the plate. Use a pencil to outline the strike plate opening and remove the plate. Cut out the wood within this outline using a wood chisel and hammer. Make the opening for the overall depth of the chiseled cavity equals 1/2-inch.

    • 6

Slip the exterior lock piece with the key entry hole into the door face with the long flat turning arm aligned through the rotating mechanism in the bolt assembly. Place the interior locking knob plate into the hole from the other side of the door and tighten the three pieces together with the included assembly screws and a Phillips-head screwdriver.

    • 7

Close the door from the inside and turn the locking knob to extend the bolt into the opening in the faceplate. Try to open the door to make sure it is securely locked. Step outside and test the key to make sure that the mechanism unlocks without difficulty.
