New Sliding Door Replacement Options

In areas that are short on space, sliding doors are an ideal alternative to doors that swing outward or inward. While you may think of them solely as interior-exterior doors, you can use them throughout your home for both convenience and an attractive look. If you are thinking about replacing sliding doors in your home, there are a variety of styles to consider. To find the right fit, consider the area where you plan to install it and how decorative a look you prefer.
  1. Pocket Doors

    • A pocket door is ideal for a space where there is not enough room for a sliding door track hinge. Instead, the door moves along its own length and tucks away into a pocket located in the wall. The track is typically mounted overhead between the walls, but some pocket doors use bottom-hung tracks. Depending on the space between the walls, you may choose for a single or double door option. Pocket doors are often used for closets, bathrooms, utility rooms and offices but are also an effective choice between rooms, such as a bedroom and sitting area or dining room and living room.

    Arcadia Doors

    • Often used between interior and exterior portions of a home, arcadia doors also may be referred to as patio doors. They are typically made of glass and have a rectangular shape. The door is fitted onto rollers that are mounted to a glass panel similar in size and shape to the door. When the door is open, it slides back behind the panel; when it is closed, it moves into place beside it. Because an arcadia door's track may be exposed to inclement weather and moisture in an exterior application, the tracks are usually made of a durable metal, such as solid steel.

    Bypass Doors

    • Bypass doors utilize tracks that are mounted at both the top and bottom of the frame. The two doors slide behind one another when open to provide access and are positioned beside one another when closed. These doors are typically used for pantries, closets, storage rooms and other small areas.

    French Doors

    • One of the most decorative styles of sliding doors is the French door. Classic French doors usually consist of two doors placed side by side that open outward in the center. Sliding French doors usually have two panels that move inward to a central point. However, they still have the elegant multi-paned look of a traditional French door. As a result, sliding French doors are ideal if you like the look of the style but do not have the space for French doors that open outward.
