How to Install Roll Up Garage Door Tracks

One type of garage door is a roll-up door. A roll-up door has several different panels connected by hinges that have wheels attached to the sides. The wheels are located inside metal tracks, which lock the door into position and provide a surface for the wheels to roll on. When installing a new garage door, the tracks must be installed properly in order for the door to function. This is a project you can complete with a little assistance.

Instructions

    • 1

Assemble the door tracks. The precise method can vary by manufacturer, so follow the instructions.

    • 2

Install the rollers and any needed brackets on the bottom door section, following the manufacturer's instructions. Move the panel into the doorway, centering it.

    • 3

Slide the tracks over the wheels on the door panel, leaving a small amount of space between the panel and the tracks so movement isn't restricted.

    • 4

Drive screws partway through the holes on the tracks and into the framing. Don't drive the screws completely into the framing yet in case you need to adjust the tracks.

    • 5

Connect the hinge and roller to one side of the second door panel.

    • 6

Place the second door panel on top of the first panel, sliding the wheel into the track as you do it.

    • 7

Attach the wheel to the other side of the second door panel.

    • 8

Check the tracks for level and make sure they're not too tight against the door, and screw them tightly into the door frame.
