How to Make Homemade Screen Doors

If you have an open porch on your home and enclose it in screen, you'll need a screen door to complete the project. Rather than purchase a prefabricated screen door, make one of your own. This is not a difficult project but does require planning. When you finish, you'll have a custom, homemade screen door that will fit your newly enclosed porch.

  Measure the height and width of the opening where the screen door will hang.

  Cut 10 pieces of 1-by-3-inch lumber with a circular saw to fit the opening. For instance, if the opening is 3 feet wide by 7 feet, you'll need four 3-foot-long pieces to form the top and bottom, four 7-foot pieces to form the sides and two 2 1/2-foot piece to form the middle support beam.

  Fasten the sides to the top and bottom pieces using a nail gun to drive a nail through the top and bottom pieces into the sides. This will form two separate but equally-sized frames. Attach the middle support beam to each frame with a nail gun.

  Lay one frame onto the floor and roll screen out over it. Then lay the other frame on top of the screen, sandwiching the screen between the two frames. Pull the screen taut by hand while fastening the two frames together with a nail gun.

  Cut away excess screen with a utility knife.

  Attach hinges to the homemade screen door with a screw gun and screws. Attach handles to the screen door as well. Hang the screen door in the opening using a screw gun to connect the hinges to the opening.
