How to De-Core a Kwikset Deadbold Lock

Before you run out to buy a new deadbolt to replace a lost key or malfunctioning lock, consider removing the core and fixing or re-keying it instead. When the middle core of a deadbolt is removed, the inner components are accessible, including the plugs, which are metal pins that can be rearranged to match a different key. Once you access the plugs and springs, you can make the necessary changes to your deadbolt to make it work again without having to buy a new one.

Instructions

  1. Removing the Core Using a Control Key

    • 1

Insert the control key into the deadbolt lock. A control key is a key that fits your lock but has a notch cut out of the top straight edge, allowing the key to turn in the opposite direction to remove the core.

    • 2

Turn the control key counterclockwise about a quarter of a turn.

    • 3

Pull the key toward you to remove the core from the deadbolt.

Removing the Core Without a Control Key

    • 4

Unscrew the screws attaching the deadbolt to the door using a screwdriver that matches your screws, usually a Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the deadbolt off the door.

    • 5

Remove the cylinder assembly, the piece with the cylindrical body and long bar sticking out of the back, from the outer casing.

    • 6

Pull the spring, the small metal piece whose curved end is showing below the long bar sticking out of the back, gently out of the assembly using pliers.

    • 7

Insert the end of the spring into the T-shaped slot on the side of the cylinder. Move the spring around until the inside of the cylinder assembly comes loose, releasing the deadbolt core.
