Insert the control key into the deadbolt lock. A control key is a key that fits your lock but has a notch cut out of the top straight edge, allowing the key to turn in the opposite direction to remove the core.
Turn the control key counterclockwise about a quarter of a turn.
Pull the key toward you to remove the core from the deadbolt.
Unscrew the screws attaching the deadbolt to the door using a screwdriver that matches your screws, usually a Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the deadbolt off the door.
Remove the cylinder assembly, the piece with the cylindrical body and long bar sticking out of the back, from the outer casing.
Pull the spring, the small metal piece whose curved end is showing below the long bar sticking out of the back, gently out of the assembly using pliers.
Insert the end of the spring into the T-shaped slot on the side of the cylinder. Move the spring around until the inside of the cylinder assembly comes loose, releasing the deadbolt core.
