Remove the door knob or handle if necessary by loosening the screws with a screwdriver. You will need the outer surface of the door to be flat. You may need to remove the molding or trim around the door with a pry bar to create a flatter surface.
Assemble the bookcase if it is not already assembled and place furniture sliders under the bookcase so that it will slide on the floor freely. If the bookcase will be located on carpet, place furniture sliders under the bookcase anyway for extra clearance once it is attached to the door.
Slide the bookcase up to the doorway so that it is flat against the door and the surrounding wall. If the hinges are on the outside of the doorway, slide the bookcase right up against them, but do not cover them.
Drill wood screws through the back of the bookcase and into the door, but not into the surrounding wall. Use several screws spaced evenly throughout the door. Choose locations where the screws can later be hidden by books or other objects placed on the shelves. Remove the furniture sliders only if the bookcase is installed over carpet.
Place books and decorative items on the bookcase to make it look real. Use lighter items such as empty book bindings to help reduce the weight. If the hinges are located on the outside of the doorway, paint them the same color as the wall or use a hanging plant to hide them from view.
