How to Install Mirror Bi-Fold Doors

To give a small room a larger appearance, many homeowners install mirror bi-fold doors. This type of bi-fold door uses full-length mirrors for its door panels. The outside edge of the door pivots on a set of lugs, and the door's inside edge slides across a track. The track keeps the door from swinging wildly. Mirror bi-fold door manufacturers make door sets to fit standard size openings. Both doors can open at the same time, providing access to an entire closet.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the door frame's width, using a tape measure. Subtract 1/16 inch from the measurement and transfer the total to the mirror bi-fold door set's tracks, using a pencil to place a measurement mark at the appropriate spots. Some bi-fold doors only use a top track, and some doors use both a top and bottom track.

    • 2

Cut the tracks at the measurement marks, using a fine-tooth hacksaw.

    • 3

Slip the door snugger, if equipped, into one end of the top track and slide it to the center of the track, using the tape measure as a placement guide. Tighten the snugger's locking screw with a Phillips screwdriver. The snugger stops a closed set of bi-fold doors from vibrating.

    • 4

Insert the top track's pivot-point brackets into each end of the top track. Tighten the brackets' locking screws with the Phillips screwdriver. If the mirror bi-fold door set uses a bottom track, insert the pivot-point brackets into the ends of the bottom track and tighten the locking screws.

    • 5

Place a pencil mark on each end of the door frame's top plate 1/2 inch from the room's interior wall, using the tape measure as a placement guide. The door frame's top plate runs across the top of the door's opening.

    • 6

Hold the outside edge of the mirror bi-fold door set's top track against the pencil marks on the door set's top plate. Secure the top track to the top plate with the manufacturer-supplied mounting screws, using the correct screwdriver to turn the screws.

    • 7

Place measurement marks 1/2 inch from the edge of the room's interior wall on the floor next to both sides of door frame with the pencil, using a tape measure as a placement guide.

    • 8

Set the inside edge of the mirrored bi-fold door set's bottom track or pivot brackets next to the measurement marks on the floor.

    • 9

Secure the bottom track or pivot bracket, using the appropriate mounting method. If the mirror bi-fold door set uses a bottom track, run the manufacturer-supplied mounting screws through the bottom track's screw holes and into the floor. If the mirror bi-fold door set uses a pivot bracket, run the manufacturer-supplied mounting screws through the bracket's screw holes and into the vertical side of the door frame.

    • 10

Install the pivot pins on the top and bottom of each mirrored bi-fold door panel, using the manufacturer's instructions. Many pivot pins use spring-loaded lugs on top and screw-in lugs on the bottom.

    • 11

Position the mirror bi-fold door's top pivot pin in the top track's pivot bracket, keeping the mirrored side of the door facing away from the closet. Lift the door and slide the door's bottom pivot pin into the bottom pivot bracket. Lower the door. Repeat this for the second mirror bi-fold door.

    • 12

Step inside of the closet and close the mirror bi-fold doors. Adjust the top and bottom pivot brackets until the door sits plumb in the opening.
