How to Install a Sliding Glass Door on a Track Threshold

Sliding glass doors have two panels: a fixed panel and a sliding panel. Both panels are mounted in the opening on a track. The fixed panel stays in its track and does not move while the sliding panel slides back and forth along its track. You can remove either one or both of the doors from their tracks to replace them or clean the tracks. You are then left with two doors that must be reinstalled in the threshold tracks. You must install the fixed panel before the sliding panel for many sliding glass doors.

Instructions

    • 1

Lift the fixed door panel's top edge into the exterior upper track. The fixed door panel is the one without the pull handle. Line up the panel's bottom edge with the exterior bottom track and lower it in place.

    • 2

Push the fixed panel all the way over to the side jamb -- the side where you want the panel to stay. This creates a gap in the track next to the panel. Insert the supplied head cap into the gap. Tap it into place with a hammer. If it does not fit, push the panel tighter against the side jamb.

    • 3

Drive two 1-inch screws through the fixed panel's edge and into the side jamb. Place one screw approximately 2 inches from the panel's top edge and the other screw near the middle.

    • 4

Lift the sliding panel's top edge into the interior top track. Straighten out the panel so its bottom edge lines up with the interior bottom track. Lower the panel into the track.

    • 5

Set the upper door stop in front of the interior top track. Use a level to check that the stop runs straight across the opening, from left to right. Secure the strip in place with 1-inch screws. Position one screw approximately 2 inches from either end and the remaining screws spaced every 8 to 10 inches.
