How to Determine a Hinge's Swing

Hinges are an integral part of any door join. They are the connection between the static object and the door and allow the door to swing in an arch. How far the hinge can swing depends on a number of factors, such as where in the structure the hinge is located and what type of hinge it is. You must pay attention to this when installing hinges for the final movement of the piece.

Instructions

    • 1

Look which side of the door the hinge is located on. The swing of the hinge will be in an arc towards this side, as the hinge is the pivot point.

    • 2

Locate where on the door or joint the hinge is located. If it located on the edge of the door it would indicate that the hinge can only swing in one trajectory. If it is located in the middle of the frame above the door then the hinge be able to move both ways past the pivot, enabling a door to be swung both ways.

Examine what kind of hinge it is. The design of a hinge is crucial to how much of an arc there is in a swing. Some hinges, such as European cup hinges, allow the hinge to pivot in a long arc while others, such as butt hinges, allow a much shorter movement when connected. How they are connected is also a key factor in the swing. Hinges have three opening angles which are 100 degrees, 125 degrees, and 165 degrees.
