How to Fill in a Doorway

Homeowners completing a remodeling project in their home may elect to take a door off its hinges and fill in the doorway. This can be done in a few different ways. You can brick or block-up the doorway, install a built-in cabinet or bookcase or cover the opening in stucco or drywall. Of these, the most simple is to fill in the doorway with drywall. You can do this over the course of a weekend.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the molding from the doorway using a pry bar and discard it or save it for use elsewhere.

    • 2

Measure the doorway's height and width with a tape measure.

    • 3

Measure and cut two pieces of 2-by-4-inch lumber to fit horizontally across the top and bottom of the doorway, then measure and cut two or three pieces of 2-by-4-inch lumber to fit vertically in the doorway.

    • 4

Fit the studs into the doorway and fasten them to the doorway frame using screws and a screw gun.

    • 5

Measure the doorway again, then measure and cut two pieces of drywall to fit over both sides of the doorway using a drywall saw.

    • 6

Fasten the drywall to the studs in the doorway using drywall screws and a screw gun. Then tape the seams between the drywall sheet and door frame with drywall tape. Spread joint compound over the tape using a drywall knife, then sand smooth with medium-grit sandpaper once the compound has sufficiently dried.

    • 7

Lay drop cloths on the floor, then prime the drywall with interior primer using a roller. Paint the drywall thereafter with a matching paint to finish filling in the doorway.
