How to Remove an Archway Door

Remodeling homes doesn't always mean huge, expensive projects. Some remodeling involves simple changes in a home's interior, such as removing an archway door to make a space open. While an archway door's curved or rounded top differs in appearance from a rectangular or square door, the method used to remove an archway door does not differ. The method is the reverse of the way in which the archway door was hung. Though one person can remove an archway door, having another person's helping hands makes the task less laborious because an archway door is heavier than a typical rectangular or square door.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the archway door to a 90-degree angle, which makes the door perpendicular to the archway.

    • 2

Place shims under the door to prop it up.

    • 3

Ask someone to hold the door. Use a flat-head screwdriver and hammer to tap the pins out of the door's hinges, or pull out the pins with pliers, whichever method is less work. Remove the pins completely.

    • 4

Pull the door away from the hinges. Store the door for reuse, or dispose of the door.

    • 5

Remove the hinges fastened to the archway using a screw gun. Place the hinges with the door if you plan to reuse the door.

    • 6

Cover the holes in the archway left from the hinges with joint compound, using a putty knife to spread and smooth the joint compound. Allow the joint compound to dry overnight.

    • 7

Sand the joint compound smooth to make it flush with the archway using fine-grit sandpaper. Remove the resulting dust with a cloth or tack cloth. Paint the joint compound with a matching color using a paintbrush to finish the project.
