How to Hang Prefab Doors

A prefabricated door is already cut to fit standard doorways and needs little, if any, adjustment before it can be hung. This makes them ideal for replacing older doors that may be cracked or broken. You may need the help of a friend to hold the door in place while you attach it, to help keep it level. Some interior doors may be heavy and its helpful to have someone else holding it while you attach it to the door jamb.

Instructions

    • 1

Attach the hinges to the door. Use a screwdriver or a drill to connect one side of the hinges to the prefab door. The hinges should be flush with the door. If they are not, use a chisel to remove excess wood until the hinges lie flat.

    • 2

Hold the door up in the doorway. Line up the hinges on the jamb.

    • 3

Attach the top hinge. Drill in the screws tightly. The hinge should sit flush on the jamb. If it does not, use a chisel to remove any excess wood. If the hinge sits too deep in the jamb, use a thin wood shim between the jam and the hinge until it is flush. Repeat this with the bottom hinge.

Open the door and apply a level to the top of the door. If the screws are in properly, it should read level. If it does not, tighten the screws or reposition the hinges until the bubble is level.

Install the door hardware. Insert the knob into the door. A prefab door has a hole for both the knob and the remainder of the hardware. Insert the metal plate into the door jamb; it needs to be flush with the jamb. Chisel the wood if it is too shallow or use a shim if the area in the jamb is too deep. Screw in this plate. Finish installing the doorknob.
