How to Calculate the Height for Bifold Closet Doors

Closets are a common spot in which to install bifold doors. Bifold doors consist of two doors connected by hinges, which fold together to open and straighten out to sit side-by-side when they closed. Before you install the doors on a closet, you need to measure the opening so you know what door height you need. Measure to make sure you have enough room for the doors and the hardware you install above and below it.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the edge of the tape measure against the floor in the closet door opening. Position the tape measure so the edge is within the frame, directly below the casing, which is the horizontal wood paneling at the top of the door opening.

    • 2

Extend the tape measure up until it meets the casing above. Write down this measurement. Repeat this procedure at a second spot within the door opening to verify your first measurement.

    • 3

Obtain standard bifold doors if the opening for the closet door is between 80 and 81 inches. Subtract between 1 to 2 inches from the door opening's height, for the bifold door height, if the measurement is higher or lower than this.
