How to Block Sound From a Door

Doors are primary entrance points for sound into a room. Most doors do not seal tightly when closed, and any open air space between the door and the frame provides a perfect conduit for sound to travel. In addition, many doors are made of lightweight materials or are hollow, so sound travels through them easily. To block sound, you need to either reduce the amount of available empty space around the door or make the material it travels through difficult to penetrate. A small reduction in door noise is quite simple, but completely blocking sound requires significant effort and renovation.

Instructions

    • 1

Replace a hollow door with a solid core door.

    • 2

Screw a door sweep seal onto the floor. This consists of a metal mount that you screw into the floor, with a rubber seal that extends upward and seals to the door when it is shut. This tightly closes the air space at the bottom of the door to reduce sound entry.

    • 3

Install weather stripping around the door.

    • 4

Purchase an acoustic panel that is slightly larger than your door. Place it behind the door anytime you want to further improve sound isolation from the outside.

    • 5

Install hooks on the back of the door and hang heavy blankets, towels or robes on them if installing solid core doors in the interior of your house is too much work or too expensive. The more fabric you add to the back of your door, the more it will help deaden sound.
