Door Ideas for a Den

A home that has a den offers extra, informal living space for work, play, studying, lounging and quality family time beyond the formal living room. When updating the look and feel of the den, include a door transformation in the plans. Transitioning into the room can become an exciting experience as the door gives an indication of the comfortable space that waits inside.
  1. Glass Doors

    • The option of installing a glass door is an opportunity to add more light into the space as it becomes an interior window to see what’s inside. A full-length glass door will almost make the existence of a door disappear while a French door adds a classic touch of architectural design to the translucency of the door. The glass door options do not stop there; the glass inserts can have an pattern and texture as well.

From the inside of the room, natural light from the outdoors will diffuse through the door and into the neighboring space. From the outside, a light from the den will appear as an inviting glow towards the door.

The use of a glass door eliminates the visual barrier that existed with a standard door before. People can easily see each other, and parents will enjoy looking in on their children without opening the door.

    Bifold Doors

    • Bifold doors cut down on the amount of floor space needed to swing a door open. So if there is a cozy nook right by the door, a chair can be placed there without the worry of the door blocking it once it is opened.

Bifold doors are available in varying standard door widths, which makes installing one in a standard-size doorway fairly easy. Available in louver, plain-door and raised-panel styles, the options are there to select the right door for the den.

    Pocket Doors

    • If the wall of the den with the doorway is free of electrical and plumbing, the construction and installation of pocket doors may be an option. A pocket door does not swing out into a room; instead it slides and fits inside of the wall. Pocket doors are typically plain or raised-panel wooden doors, but using a glass door instead may be an interesting alternative.

    Painted Door

    • Spruce up the den’s existing door with paint. A new coat of paint in a contrasting color draws attention to the door while a similar color blends the door in with the wall. For excitement, paint an abstract design on the door itself, borrowing from an inspirational throw pillow or decor accent piece that repeats the design theme throughout the space.

    Doubling the Door Space

    • For a den that has a single door, double the door space to make the room’s entry point grand and to create a natural flow from the adjoining space into the den. Each of the door ideas can be installed as double doors. Two doors can swing into the room, or they can bifold into a closed position on both sides of the door opening. Two pocket doors can be pulled out to meet at the center when closed and pushed into the opposite walls when opened.
