How to Take Out the Side Panel on Patio Doors

Patio doors consist of two panels, one which slides back and forth and one which remains in place on one side of the opening. If you plan to replace your patio door, most manufacturer's recommend you remove each panel before taking out the frame. For most patio doors, this means the removal of a few screws and lifting the panels out of their sliding tracks. If possible, ask a friend to help you with the removal of the panels since they are heavy and awkward to maneuver.

Slide the sliding panel toward the center of the door opening. Back out the screw located either in the sliding panel's top, inner corner or bottom inner corner with a flathead screwdriver. This screw lowers the panel's rollers.

Grasp the panel with two hands, one on either side. Gently lift up on the panel and pull the bottom edge toward you. Lower the panel until the bottom edge touches the floor. Have a friend assist you in carrying the panel away from the opening.

Back out the screws from the spacer in the fixed panel's upper track. This spacer helps hold the panel in place. Look around the fixed panel's edges to locate any screws holding it in place.
