How to Apply Urethane to a Wood Door

The polymer known as urethane has been around since the 1940s, and since that time it has become a popular choice for all sorts of applications. Homeowners can use urethane to coat and protect the wood furniture in their homes, including their interior and exterior doors. When you apply urethane to an existing wood door, you help to bring out the natural grain and color, while at the same time protecting that door from the elements.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the door from its hinges and place it on a set of saw horses. You need to have a solid surface on which to prepare the door for the urethane coating.

    • 2

Sand the top side of the door lightly, using either a hand sander or a power unit. This creates a rough surface and makes it easier for the urethane to adhere to the door.

    • 3

Use a paint brush to apply the urethane coating to the door. Use long strokes when applying the urethane coating. Always apply the coating in the direction of the wood grain.

    • 4

Wait for the urethane coating to dry on to the door before proceeding. Refer to the instructions on the can for drying times. It generally takes between eight and 10 hours for the coating to dry completely.

    • 5

Sand the door lightly after the urethane coating has dried. Apply a second coating of urethane to the door, using the same long strokes and moving with the grain of the wood.

    • 6

Wait for the second coat of urethane to dry completely, then flip the door over and lightly sand the surface. Apply the urethane coating to the other side using the same techniques you used on the front side. Wait for the coating to dry, then put the door back on the hinges.
