Painting Hardware on Mirrored Closet Doors

Hardware can make or break the look of cabinets, doors and closets. Outdated hardware can make the entire room look dated. Instead of spending money to replace the hardware on a mirrored closet, consider the less expensive route of painting the hardware. The entire process only takes a few days and the paint typically holds up well with use. Spray paint comes in a large variety of colors as well as metallic finishes.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the hardware from the closet doors. Unscrew the hardware with a screwdriver. Work carefully so you do not damage the mirrored closet while removing the hardware. Clean the hardware with degreasing soap and water to remove any dirt or grease.

    • 2

Create several holes in a sheet of cardboard. The holes should be big enough for the screws on the hardware to fit through. Fit the hardware screws through the cardboard holes.

    • 3

Lay down a drop cloth in a well-ventilated area. Place the cardboard sheet on the drop cloth.

    • 4

Prime the hardware with a spray surface primer. Hold the can of primer approximately 12 inches from the hardware. Spray the primer on the hardware. Allow the first coat to dry completely before applying a second light coat. Allow the second coat to dry.

Paint the hardware with spray paint in your chosen color. Hold the paint 12 inches from the hardware and move the can in a back and forth motion while spraying. Always keep the can in motion while spraying so you do not get large amounts of paint on one area of the hardware. Spray several coats of paint on the hardware, allowing each coat of paint to dry before applying the next coat.
