How to Measure for Slab Bypass Doors

As part of the process of installing new doors, you not only choose the type of door you want along with the material you want the door to be made of, but also the style of the door. As opposed to prehung doors, which include the jamb and the frame, slab doors are just the doors themselves, with no additional parts that help the door operate. Bypass doors, commonly used on closets, consist of two door sections that hang on rollers and slide open and closed on a track. Measure beforehand to make certain you get the right size doors.

Instructions

Start at the bottom inside edge of the door opening. Measure from the finished wall on one side of the opening, to the finished wall on the opposite side of the door opening. Use a tape measure.

    • 2

Repeat the side-to-side measurement in the center and in the top of the door opening. Use a pencil and paper to write down the shortest of these three measurements as the total width for the two bypass door sections.

    • 3

Measure the height of the door opening. Start at the top of the door threshold, if there is a threshold in place, or start at the floor, using the tape measure. Measure up to the casing at the top of the door opening.
