How to Make Cabin Doors

Cabin doors are usually constructed to match the log cabin, with the door often made from the same wood the rest of the cabin was constructed with. The log cabin door can range widely in complexity, but anyone with basic knowledge of woodworking can construct a simple log cabin door using panels of wood and some metal parts.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the size of the door frame to determine how large the log cabin door should be. Use the measurement you gathered to determine how many wooden boards you should put together to construct a door large enough to fit the doorway (See References 3).

    • 2

Drill holes into strips of metal that are as tall as the door and wide enough to cover a portion of both panels. The holes should be in pairs, with one screw hole intended for screwing a screw into each panel of wood, holding the panels together. Lay strips of metal over the points where the two wooden panels meet. Screw screws into the screw holes to hold the panels together, using a screwdriver.

    • 3

Coat the exterior log cabin door with at least two coats of spar varnish or polyurethane to prevent the door from warping when it is exposed to moisture. Use a brush to apply each coating while going with the grain of the wood.

    • 4

Hold the door up and determine where the hinges should screw into. Mark these places on the doorway. Then, place each hinge on the spot that you marked and screw the hinge into the doorway. Use a hammer and a chisel to scrape off wood where you want to put the hinge on one of the wood panels, so no part of the hinge sticks out, allowing the door to smoothly close. Screw the other part of the hinge into one of the panels. When you have finished the door, you can fit metal hinges together and insert the pin into the hinges from the top.
