How to Use Semi-Gloss or Satin Urethane on Fiberglass Doors

The right paint helps ensure a good finish to a fiberglass door. Unlike a wood door, fiberglass does not absorb paint or stain. Unlike a metal door, fiberglass does not require a primer. It does, however, require a special preparation to ensure the project turns out as desired. When selecting paint, use a high quality, oil-based urethane paint. Urethane will stick to almost any surface and may be preferred for this reason.

Instructions

    • 1

Cover any weatherstripping on the door with masking or painter's tape. This will prevent it from becoming damaged during the preparation and painting of the door.

    • 2

Clean the door with mineral spirits. Before the door can be painted, it must be free of dirt and debris. Apply mineral spirits to a clean, dry rag and rub the door in a circular motion. Clean both sides and the edges in this manner. Allow it to dry. Do not proceed with the project until no smell is apparent from the mineral spirits on the door.

    • 3

Wash the door with a mild detergent. Add a small amount of dish soap or other mild detergent to a bucket of water and wash the door thoroughly with a clean rag. Rinse with clear running water and allow the door to dry completely.

    • 4

Paint the door using oil-based semi-gloss or satin urethane paint using a natural bristle brush. Dip the brush into the paint and scrape off the excess. Paint with the grain of the fiberglass. Make long, smooth strokes, keeping the layer of paint thin. Allow the door to dry for at least 24 hours.

Apply a second coat of paint if needed. Allow it to dry for 24 hours.
