How to Install a Self-Closing Door

A self-closing door is a door with spring-loaded hinges that will bounce back shut by itself after you've opened it and let go. Self-closing doors could be used to help keep animals out of certain rooms when your back is turned or for any room where the door must stay shut as much as possible. You do not need to install a whole new door to to make it self-closing, you just need to install spring-loaded hinges.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the door from the original hinges with the Phillips screwdriver. There are typically three hinges with two to three screws each. Set the door aside.

    • 2

Remove the original hinges from the trim around the door. You may dispose of the hinges, if you wish.

    • 3

Attach the spring-loaded hinges to the door in roughly the same spots as the original hinges with wood screws. You may need to make more screw holes with a power drill if the holes on the spring-loaded hinges do not match up with the holes in the door from the original hinges.

Line the door up against the trim and attach the open side of the hinges to it with wood screws. Tighten all screws and swing the door to test it. It should pull open, then gently close by itself when you let go.
