How to Install Bifold Doors in a Standard Door Frame

Bifold doors come in many sizes to fit different standard door opening sizes. To determine if your door opening is standard or not, measure the opening's height and width. Take these measurements to your local home builder's supply store. If you have a standard opening, they will have a bifold door that will fit your needs. If you have a nonstandard opening, you will need to custom order a bifold door that will work in your opening. This can cost a little more money.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the pivoting bifold door panel on its edge. That's the panel that will not slide along the track. Measure 11 inches up from the bottom edge and make a mark. Measure 7 inches down from the top edge and make a mark. Make a third mark centered between the two marks.

    • 2

Place the bottom edge of a hinge on the bottom mark, with its knuckles facing the back of the panel. Drill 1/8-inch pilot holes through the hinge's screw holes. Secure the hinge to the panel with the provided screws. Repeat this step for the top and middle hinges.

    • 3

Hold the leading panel, which will slide along the track, back to back with the pivoting panel. Hold a carpenter's square along the bottom edges of the two doors. Place the hinge's other half on the leading panel's edge. Drill pilot holes through the hinges' screw holes and secure them in place with the provided screws.

    • 4

Measure the door opening's width and subtract 1/8 inch. Transfer this measurement to the bifold door's track. Cut the track to this length with a fine-tooth hacksaw. Center the track over the door opening, with the pivot bracket located above where the pivoting panel will be. Secure the track in place with the provided screws.

    • 5

Hold a plumb bob directly below the pivot bracket's opening. Center the supplied floor bracket underneath the plumb bob. Screw the bracket in place with the provided screws.

    • 6

Insert the upper pivot pin into the hole in the pivoting panel's upper edge. Tap the pin gently with a hammer to push it down as far as it will go. Insert the lower pivot pin into the hole in the pivoting panel's bottom edge and tap it in with a hammer. Insert the guiding pin into the hole in the leading panel's upper edge and tap it in with a hammer.

    • 7

Insert the pivoting panel's upper pivot into the pivot bracket in the track and the lower pivot into the floor bracket. Press down on the guiding pin, center it under the track, then release it.

    • 8

Close the bifold door and check the gap running around its perimeter. If the gap is uneven along the sides, use a screwdriver to loosen the screw in the pivot bracket. Move the bracket to either the left or right to even the side gap and tighten the screw. If the top gap is uneven, remove the lower pivot from the floor bracket. Turn the pivot either clockwise or counterclockwise to raise or lower the panel and even the gap.
