How to Add Mullions to a Glass Door to Create a French Door

Adding mullions to a glass door provides an elegant appearance to your decor. Add-on PVC plastic mullion kits are readily available through home improvement stores and online. The mullions are adhered to the exterior side or both sides of the glass. With careful measurements and an afternoon's work, your "new" French door is ready for use.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the glass door thoroughly with window cleaner and paper towels. Wipe the outside with vertical strokes and the inside with horizontal strokes. If there are any streaks, you will be able to see if they're on the inside or the outside of the glass.

    • 2

Measure the door glass carefully. Refer to the manufacturer's instructions on assembling the mullion kit.

    • 3

Mark the frame around the glass with a pencil, indicating the center points of each mullion.

    • 4

Apply the clear, double-stick tape to the glass, aligning with the pencil marks. Use a spirit level to ensure that the tape is perfectly horizontal and vertical. Roll over the tape with a 2-inch-wide roller, pressing it firmly into place. Some manufacturer's instructions require an hour of curing time before continuing with the installation.

    • 5

Pull up one corner of the double-stick tape. Align the mullion over the tape, then carefully peel the protective paper off the tape, pulling it gently at a 45-degree angle. After all the mullions are attached, press them firmly into place with the roller.

Repeat the process on the other side of the glass. Align the tape and mullions with the previously applied mullions.
