Examine the door and the door jamb for the exact area in which you want to place the closer, whether on the top, bottom or middle. Choose an area that allows the door to freely swing closed.
Use a tape measure to measure 1/4 inch from the door edge onto the jamb, in the spot you've chosen to install the closer. Mark the spot with a pencil. If you want the closer to use more force, move this measurement on the jamb to 1 inch away from the door edge.
Hold the closer's jamb bracket into position on the marked jamb, and use a pencil to mark the locations for the bracket screws on the jamb.
Drill pilot holes for the bracket screws into the jamb with an electric drill. Hold the bracket into place, and attach it to the jamb with screws, using the electric drill or a screwdriver.
Attach the closer to the jamb bracket. Attach the door bracket to the end of the closer, and hold the door bracket, with the closer being level, against the shut door. Mark the door bracket's screw hole positions on the door with a pencil.
Open the door, and drill pilot holes for the door bracket screws into the door.
Close the door. Install the screws through the door bracket to attach it to the door. Follow the closer manufacturer's instructions to adjust the speed at which the closer shuts the door, often by turning the adjusting screw on the closer.
