How to Build a Folding Partition

A folding partition or room divider can be useful for organizing space and people in a variety of settings, including work, school, event and home settings. While purchasing enough folding partitions to accommodate your event or function can add up quickly cost-wise, designing and building your own folding partitions can save you money, and it's a doable and manageable project as long as you have the right tools and materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Pick out three to four equal-sized pinewood panels from your local hardware store. Width of the same-sized panels can vary to some degree, but partition panels more than two feet in width can be more difficult to work with and to handle during event or function setup. Choose an appropriate height for your needs, depending on your room setting.

    • 2

Sandpaper the panels until the surfaces and edges are smooth. Dust and wipe off each panel afterward.

    • 3

Draw designs, if desired, on each panel with chalk. Trace over the designs with pencil once you’re set on your designs.

    • 4

Tape around and along the edges of your hand-drawn designs with painter’s tape. Use painter’s tape between different backgrounds also.

    • 5

Paint your panel designs and backgrounds. Allow the panels to dry overnight.

    • 6

Measure, draw and align pencil markings for the partition hinge sets. Mount and screw in the hinge sets for connecting your panels.

    • 7

Label each panel in the order in which each will be adjoined. You can use chalk or a pencil to add labels. Wipe off or erase after you’ve assembled the folding partition.

    • 8

Make multiple folding partitions as needed for your setting, event or function.
