Cutting the Siding for a Bigger Front Door

A larger exterior door requires the removal of some siding, but cutting too much siding or making a deep cut leaves you with repairs to make. For a smooth door installation, you need to take accurate measurements so you are able to cut just enough siding to make room for the new entry door. You also need the proper equipment so you are able to control the depth of the cuts in the siding to prevent unnecessary damage underneath.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the old door from the frame. Remove the trim and frame for the existing door by prying it away from the opening.

    • 2

Read the literature included with the new door to determine the exact size needed for the rough opening. Use this information to measure around the existing opening to determine how much you need to remove. Make marks around the door opening to show where you need to make the cuts in the siding.

    • 3

Hold the new door and its frame up to the opening to ensure the lines you made are accurate. Make adjustments to the measurements and markings as necessary to accommodate the door properly.

    • 4

Cut the siding along the marked lines using a circular saw. Set the blade so it only cuts through the siding.

    • 5

Chisel out the siding at the corners of the openings if necessary. You may need to also use the chisel near the bottom of the opening to fully remove the siding.

    • 6

Hold the door and its frame back in place to ensure the new hole in the siding is large enough. Make additional cuts with the circular saw and chisel as necessary to make the hole the proper size.
