How to Figure Door Swing

All doors, including front, bedroom and bathroom doors, have what builders term a "swing" and a "handing." "Swing" simply refers to the direction the door swings when it opens. "Handing" refers to whether the door is right-handed or left-handed. Knowing your door's swing, as well as its handing, is important if you need to install a new handle, doorknob or lock. The necessary hardware varies depending on the door's swing and handing.

Instructions

  1. Swing

    • 1

Stand in front of the closed door as if you are about to enter the home or room.

    • 2

Push the door open. If the door does not push open, pull it open.

    • 3

Look at the way the door swings. If it swings toward you, it is an out-swing door. Doors that swing into a home or room are in-swing doors.

    Handing

    • 4

Stand outside the door. Close the door. Turn around so your back faces the door hinges.

    • 5

Hold your arms out straight in front of yourself.

    • 6

Look at the position of your hands. If your left hand looks closer to the door handle or doorknob than your right hand, the door is left-handed. The door is right-handed if your right hand is closer to the door's handle or knob.
