How to Trim Door Frames for Tile

Tile floor thicknesses can vary tremendously from one to another. If you are installing a floor that is thicker than the previous floor, or you are installing tile over old tile flooring, you may find that the new flooring is too thick to fit beneath the door frame. This means that the door frames need to be trimmed down to the correct size using a jamb saw, which is a special saw made just for this use.

  Place the tile on the floor next to the door jamb. Draw a straight line just above the tile across the jamb to indicate where the cut will need to be made. Remember to give a little extra clearance for the mortar that will be beneath the tile.

  Turn on the jamb saw and hold it parallel to the floor so its blade is lined up with the pencil mark you made on the jamb.

  Push the jamb saw gently into the frame so the blade intersects with the pencil mark. Keep light but steady pressure on the saw as it cuts through the frame. When you feel the saw cut through the entire frame, move it over slightly to do any portion of the frame that may have been missed. The piece will fall out on its own when you are done.

  Sweep up the sawdust well before you lay the tiles to prevent it from getting into the tile mortar.
